Who is behind SmartCity Malta?

SmartCity Malta is supported by key stakeholders committed to driving innovation and economic growth. Dubai Holding stands out as a major force, leveraging its extensive experience and investment capabilities to enhance the development and vision of SmartCity.

Dubai Holding is an investment conglomerate with operations in 12 countries employing over 20,000 people. Established in 2004, Dubai Holding today manages an AED 130 billion portfolio of assets, which supports the strong development of Dubai’s non-oil economy across sectors including tourism hospitality, real estate, media, ICT, education, design and trade. Its portfolio includes TECOM Group, which manages 11 of Dubai’s most successful business communities; Jumeirah Group, the hospitality arm which owns and operates 22 hotel developments in 10 destinations in 9 countries; Dubai Properties Group, one of the largest fully integrated and community development business in Dubai; Arab Media Group, which implements a strategic plan to develop new family destinations and further grow digital media business lines.

Kurt Camilleri

Chief Operating Officer
Kurt Camilleri, with over two decades of leadership experience, currently serves as the COO of SmartCity Malta. He brings a strong background in telecommunications and real estate from roles at GO Plc, Vodafone Malta and @Home Benelux. Kurt holds a B. Eng. degree from the University of Malta and an M.Sc degree from Cranfield University (UK). Having joined SmartCity Malta in 2018, Kurt now leads the company's next phase of development, focusing on innovation and strategic growth.

Maria Zahra

Financial Controller
Maria Zahra is a certified public accountant with 25 years of experience in finance. After 15 years at GO Plc, she transitioned to the food industry before joining SmartCity Malta in 2018. Specialising in financial planning and control, Maria also holds a Master’s in Forensic Accounting and is committed to enhancing governance and sustainability within the company.

Lara Caruana

Manager, Corporate Affairs
Lara Caruana is a dynamic professional with a wealth of experience in corporate affairs. With an International Diploma in Governance, Risk and Compliance, Lara brings over 15 years of experience in people management, event planning, and organisational efficiency, as well as compliance and project tracking. She is currently pursuing a Masters in Management, and her  commitment to excellence and effective leadership makes her an invaluable asset to the team.

Jan Deschrijver

Chief Projects Officer
Jan Deschrijver is a qualified Structural and Civil Engineer (recognised in Malta as a ‘Perit’). With extensive experience in large-scale construction projects both locally and internationally, Jan plays a key role in master planning, project management, and ensuring the successful delivery of SmartCity Malta’s developments.
